A remake of The Wizard of Oz?
According to Variety Todd McFarlane (creator of Spawn) is looking to get the ball rolling on a new 'Wizard of Oz.' He is teaming up with screen-writer Josh Olson (A History of Violence) to bring a dark new vision of the classic to the screen. With the perpetual onslaught of films that were good the first time round being remade it's mildly nausiating, but this project seems to have a little something different than a remake of, say, 'Enter the Dragon.'
A few years back McFarlane designed a series of figures/toys based on The Wizard of Oz (which are kind of shocking and disturbing, also kind of interesting):
This, likely, isn't going to be your mother's Wizard of Oz, but don't expect bondage porn (like the toys indicate) Olson told Variety:
Rotten Tomatoes added a quote from McFarlane on the film as well:
The film will see a release through Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures, though no details are being released as to who will star in, direct, or when they anticipate a release. Currently McFarlane is finishing up 'The Torso' which has David Fincher (Zodiac, Seven) attatched to direct.
Oh yeah, remember that horrifying 1985 sequel to Wizard of Oz? Awesome, the best mistake Disney ever made.

"I saw those toys, and Dorothy as some bondage queen isn't something I want to do...the appealing thing about the Baum books to me is how wildly imaginative they are. There are crazy characters from amazing places. I want this to be 'Harry Potter' dark, not 'Seven' dark."
Rotten Tomatoes added a quote from McFarlane on the film as well:
"My pitch was 'How do we get people who went to 'Lord of the Rings' to embrace this?' I want to create (an interpretation) that has a 2007 wow factor. You've still got Dorothy trapped in an odd place, but she's much closer to the Ripley from 'Alien' than a helpless singing girl."
