Celluloid Notes aug.7: Eastern Promises, Monopoly, podcast, Reservation Road and more
Newsworthy:
Cronenberg film to open San Sebastian Film Festival
David Cronenberg's newest film, 'Eastern Promises,' is going to open Spain's San Sebastian Film Festival next month on Septembre 20th. Spain's oldest and most prestigous film festival is also hosting the new Michael Caine and Demi Moore led, Michael Radford film, "Flawless." Which is a jewel heist film (that I think is looking pretty good), which will close the festival, though it is not in competition. American author Paul auster will be the president of the jury for this year's festival. Also his new film, 'The Inner Life of Martin Frost,' shot in Portugal, will be screened at the festival, out of competition.
The Eastern Promises Trailer:
'Wolverine' details released
Wizard has confirmed that David Benioff (Troy, The Kite Runner) will be penning the new film, and that there will not be a cache of "unexpected" X-Men characters flooding the film. Also confirmed is the choice of Gavin Hood (Tsotsi, Unrendered) to direct the film. Wizard's rather lengthy article tools out many details from the forthcoming film, slated for sometime in 2008. Here is a chunk of the article reposted on Rotten Tomatoes:
"Based on info from insiders who say they’ve read Benioff’s script, get ready for all kinds of prequel action as Wolverine’s first ties to Weapon X, his first run-in with Victor Creed (aka Sabretooth), his bonding with adamantium and his feral origins are explored. When asked if the film would touch on Wolvie’s early-year comic book connections to Japan, [Hugh] Jackman curbed the rumor in favor of others.
“[The Japan connection] is still something we really want to do,” admitted the actor-producer. “What we need to do is establish who he is and find out how he became Wolverine. And by the end of the movie, I want it to be that you definitely knew who this guy was, like Mad Max and Dirty Harry. He’s a good guy, but he’s not a nice guy. He’s just the guy you want on your side.” Sources also mentioned scenes featuring Wolverine in Vietnam, a pre-X-Men love interest for the furry mutant and character names familiar to comic fans such as the teleporter John Wraith, who served with Wolverine on special ops missions as part of Team X, along with Fred J. Dukes (aka the Blob)"
This is kinda old, but a new article on the matter was published and I'm still shocked months later
I just wanted to take this opportunity to post a quote from Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Alien, American Gangster) about his intentions to make a Monopoly movie.
American Cinematographer podcast
One of the best industry magazines, American Cinematographer, has begun a free podcast available on iTunes. The first two part interview is with The Sopranos cinematographer Alik Sakharov. This should wind up being a great podcast, if you've never read the magazine it's certainly worth getting. about as close to film school in a magazine as you can get.
Trailers-n-Things
Reservation Road poster posted and Trailer of the Day
Terry George's (Hotel Rwanda) new film 'Reservation Road' now has a poster and trailer online. Dig it.
Retro-Trailer of the Day
So this isn't really the trailer for 'The Great Dictator,' but Filmafic's post would have been a great trailer. This clip really says everything you need to know to want to see the film, it's all there.

Monopoly is still the most popular board game – I might be misquoting! – in the world. It’s finding the universe for that game.
Clearly it ought to be humorous and for the family. Somewhere in that is a hysterically amusing and I think rather exciting film.
